sushi in tuggers

To me, the things that makes sushi awesome is the freshness and generosity of fillings. The new 'Hero Sushi' in Tuggeranong's Hyperdome is far away from the typical sushi-eating inner-city crew in Canberra but offers a great range of sushi.

There were numerous vegetarian options (what?!?!) - my favourite was the sushi covered with tofu skin and filled with avocado/cucumber. I was so excited to eat it... it looked and smelt delicious and had a combo of veges that I normally don't see together on one sushi roll. Eating it engaged all my senses and I was thrilled.
As I was taking a picture of the sushi place, I realised it was a dumb foodie move. A young girl with her mother walked past me and the girl said loudly in complete bemusement and wonder: 'Is she really taking a photo of the sushi place?' Lol.

Sushi Bay

After spending months in Canberra, I've learnt to appreciate more my friends in Sydney who know me as a person outside of work. As most people in their 20s, I've been through a lot of stages in the past couple of years. But it's important for me to have a couple of friends who, no matter what mindf*** I experience or particular anxiety I draw myself into, at the end of the day, they'll empathise, laugh and love me for who I am :).

I caught up with an old friend at Sushi Bay in Castle Towers. The food was good and beats most of the stuff in Canberra. Most of it wasn't mind-blowingly spectacular, but this is just what I needed - comfort and familiarity. There was just one sushi plate that looked a bit odd, as the rice was purple?!?! I suspect it was some type of glutenous rice or white rice coloured with red bean or something.

I've been here several times and would continue to go. It's a good and convenient sushi place for the North-West of Sydney :).

Sushi Hotaru

Everytime I visit Sydney, I insist on eating sushi as there is a serious lack of good sushi in Canberra. My friend brought me to Sushi Hotaro, the new-ish sushi train under the Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya in Galleries Victoria. It was right after Christmas, so the place was packed with tired (mostly Asian) shoppers. Each dish was $3 + 10% holiday surcharge. The price per dish was definitely value-for-money as most dishes had some form of seafood. It was one of the best sushi trains I've been to in Sydney!

Apparently, seafood is one of the most environmentally-unsustainable foods to consume as it is farmed and sourced using an extraordinary amount of natural/man-made resources. I ignored all of this, just for this meal. I promise I'll eat less seafood in 2012 :) and I usually stick to my convictions.

There was a magnificent artwork in the centre of Galleries Victoria with hundreds of books suspended from strings. It was like a massive diorama (there's probably a more sophisticated description for this type of art).

sydney takeaway sushi

The quality of take away sushi in Sydney is remarkably different from Canberra. I'm not sure if the franchise 'Asagao' is in Canb, but their sushi has a proportionally high amount of meat or veges (as you can see below). There is a high turnover of food so the fresh and not crisping on the sides.

i heart sydney

So I haven't had much time to update this blog because well, my flatmate was overseas for 6 weeks and in attempt to keep myself busy, I went to Sydney whenever I had the chance. But a trip to Sydney is not complete without gorging on the food there. My increasing winter belly has benefited from that.

And pictures pictures - of course. I'm not completely neglecting this blog!

Sushi, Guylian chocolate, a vegetarian meal @ the Mind Body Spirit Festival, my lovely friends and I @ Newtown, a home-made salad the size of half a stock pot and home-prepared quail.

One place that I'd definitely recommend is Correlli's in Newtown. It's on King Street and in a old 'School of Art' building. It was good because the food was fresh, balanced, tasty and generous for what we paid. Oh and the atmosphere is nice and casual.

Man, I miss Japanese food - Canberra is deprived of Japanese food as I know it - delicate genuine but complex flavours, well prepared/cut sashimi, non deep-fried options and fresh. Here, we ate at Epping's Sushi Bar. You'd get a decent feed for less than $15 and its one of my favourite sushi places.

The below pics were taken at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. It includes:
* 'deep fried cheesecake' (err cholesterol hit, yes?)
* the famous Woolworths food hall (where you'd go sample-crazy)
* displays of food (amazingly cute) etc
